Meet the Hellcat-Slaying Supercharged Callaway Camaro SC740
Like a Camaro ZL1, except with 100 horsepower more.
The 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is barely out of the womb, but that won't keep the performance fiends at Callaway Cars from working one over. And as is tradition for Reeves Callaway and his motley crew of factory-endorsed tuners, the plan involves a hefty serving of Vitamin H.
As the wise owls amongst you have already sussed out, the new Callaway SC740 makes 740 horsepower—a 100 pony increase over the ZL1. To get there, the Callaway folks stripped off the LT4's factory 1.7-liter Roots-type supercharger and replaced it with one of their own design, based on the Eaton blower used in the C6-generation Corvette ZR1. Callaway's TripleCooled intercooler system, combined with the bespoke supercharged housing and integrated intake manifold, lowers the temperature of air moving through the blower, helping generate all that extra juice.
Callaway hasn't released images of the car, but has stated that the SC740 will have a unique hood with an opening for the supercharger assembly to poke its head into the air, much like the Camaro SS-based Callaway SC610 pictured above. With the Camaro ZL1 going on sale this fall, we likely won't see the SC740 on the streets until nearly the end of the year. Which is fine, really. We'd like to have a little time to get used to the lunacy of a 640-hp Camaro with a 10-speed transmission before tasting the 740-hp version.
