When Dave Cummings wakes up in the morning, he doesn’t let his age serve as some flimsy excuse to lay around all day. He gets up, hops on his bike and begins a day filled with physically grueling activities. Like kitesurfing.

After Cummings’ wife passed away 16 years ago, he decided to live life as if each day were his last. Conquering sports that most able-bodied twenty-somethings would shy away from, he spent the first three years after his wife’s death exploring the worlds of skiing, surfing, windsurfing and kiteboarding. When he returned to his hometown of Fareham, England, he decided to take up kitesurfing. Although he admits he isn’t as limber as he once was, Cummings doesn’t let that lead to excuses.

Safe to say we all can take something from Cummings’ example. And the best way to honor his total badassity may be to get outdoors this weekend and do something outside our comfort zones. Whether it’s skydiving or birdwatching, enjoy what your body enables you to do. And never, ever use “I am sore from working out” again as an excuse for staying in. Ever.
